FT: The EU will protect Hungary, Poland and Slovakia in connection with Kyiv’s claims at the WTO

The European Union will come to the defense of Hungary, Poland and Slovakia in connection with Kyiv’s claims in the WTO. The Financial Times writes about this with reference to a written appeal from EK to Budapest, Warsaw and Bratislava.

The European Commission is already working on “coordination of legal actions.” “In accordance with EU law, the European Commission will participate in this WTO proceedings initiated against member states,” quotes excerpts from Brussels’ written statement.

“The EC’s next step will be Ukraine’s response to requests for consultations on behalf of all three states,” the message specifies, excerpts quoted by TASS.

Moreover, earlier the EC demanded that three states lift the ban on the import of grain from Ukraine.

Let us remind you that on September 15, the EC did not extend the embargo on grain supplies from Ukraine to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. Representatives of three Eastern European countries did not agree with this and limited the import of Ukrainian grain at the national level. Reacting to this decision, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine Taras Kachka said that Ukraine is preparing a complaint to the WTO due to the grain embargo on Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. He warned that if Warsaw does not lift the restrictions it has imposed, Kyiv will respond by introducing a ban on the import of Polish vegetables and fruits. In response, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia decided to boycott the coordination platform with the European Commission on grain issues. The countries announced the termination of their participation.
