Poland is considering the possibility of closing rail freight traffic with Belarus, said Maciej Wonsik, Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration of Poland.
“We understand that a significant part of the goods, including Polish ones, go through railway crossings on the Polish-Belarusian border,” the deputy minister said. He noted that Chinese trade also goes through these channels, and suggested that “the Chinese will have to send Lukashenka the right signal – not to take actions that could harm them,” Interfax reports.
According to Wonsik, currentlyand on the Polish-Belarusian border there is one checkpoint for passenger (Terespol-Brest) and cargo (Kukuryki-Kozlovichi) international traffic. The latter passes only vehicles registered in the European Union. Railroad crossings at the border are still operating without additional restrictions. From 2020 to May 2022, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Polish side introduced a ban on passenger rail transportation with Belarus, but it did not affect freight transportation.
