The Berlin public prosecutor’s office is investigating Roger Watersco-founder of Pink Floyd, on suspicion of incitement to hate, after wear an outfit “similar” to that of the SS during their concerts last May in the German capital. The Berlin Police, responsible for politically motivated crimes, has handed over the case to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Videos posted on social media showed Waters with a long black coat with military insignia and a red armband with a white circle with a symbol inside it. Clothing “very similar to an SS uniform”, according to a police spokesman at the time, although the symbol was not a swastika and was identified as two crossed hammers.
According to statements by the Police at that time, the use of this clothing could “attack the dignity of the victims of National Socialism, glorify nationalism and disturb public peace.” Nails allegations Waters denied:“The elements of my performance that have been questioned are clearly a statement of opposition to fascism, injustice and fanaticism in all its forms,” he said in a statement issued in May.
“The representation of a deranged fascist demagogue has been a feature of my shows since Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ in 1980. Attempts to present these elements as something else are disingenuous and politically motivated,” he also defended.
The musician has been repeatedly accused of anti-Semitism and in Germany there have been many reviews of their concerts. In Frankfurt, for example, his concert on May 28 was initially going to be canceled due to the aforementioned accusations. However, the singer filed a lawsuit against this decision and in April he was found to be right. In its decision, the Frankfurt Administrative Court invoked, among other things, artistic freedom.
Waters has been criticized for his closeness to the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign, which advocates a total boycott of the State of Israel, and has released pig-shaped balloons with a Star of David at his concerts.
On the other hand, Waters and his group saw the concerts they had planned in April in Krakow (Poland) canceled due to the artist’s criticism of the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
