The European Union has suspended all forms of cooperation with Niger and is awaiting the outcome of a meeting of the leaders of the countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), said Peter Stano, spokesman for EU diplomacy Josep Borrell.
The restrictions include the suspension of cooperation on migration flows, Stano said. Suspended financial support, civilian missions, cooperation on security issues, the spokesman said at a briefing in Brussels. “We are not working with the current illegal authorities in Niger,” he added.
According to Stano, the European Union is closely monitoring the situation. “We strongly support all the actions and decisions of ECOWAS. But the situation is evolving. (…) We do not recognize the military coup, we do not recognize those who illegally seized power, and we will act accordingly, with regard to all programs and all cooperation that have existed for Niger so far, ”he summed up.
