They sentenced the writer to years in prison for insulting the Russian army. He has sold hundreds of thousands of books in Poland

Dmitry G³uchowski, a well-known Russian writer, author of a series of post-apocalyptic books set in the Metro 2023 universe, also popular in Poland, has been sentenced. The court in Moscow decided on a default penalty of eight years’ imprisonment for the artist.

“Metro 2023” is a Russian novel, the first part of a trilogy by Dmitry Glukhovsky, who started a series of books about a post-apocalyptic vision of the Earth 20 years after a nuclear war. In 2007, the author was awarded for the best debut at the European literary competition Eurocon in Copenhagen. The rights to the novel have been sold to more than 30 countries, and the number of books sold worldwide has exceeded three million.

In Poland, Głuchowski’s idea met with great appreciation, the novels sold over 200,000 copies. Fans became so involved in the fate of the universe that they wrote four officially released collections of stories set in the world invented by the Russian author.

In February 2023, the case against Głuchowski began. The writer was accused of staying abroad from March to May last year and publishing posts and videos on social media that allegedly contained false information about the activities of the Russian army in the war with Ukraine.

Despite the objections of the writer’s lawyer, Wieronika Polakowa, a verdict was passed in a court in Moscow. Dmitry Glukhovsky was sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison. The independent Russian portal Mediazona reports that the court found that the writer “disseminated false information about the activities of the Russian army.” He was also accused of sowing “political hatred”.

Due to the verdict, Głuchowski cannot return to his homeland. Upon crossing the borders of Russia, he would be immediately arrested. The legal basis for initiating an investigation against the writer was Russian law, which prohibits the transmission of false information about the proceedings of the local army.
