It became known why those who lost weight quickly gain weight again. People who have lost extra pounds find it difficult to maintain weight due to disturbances in the brain, which becomes insensitive to satiety signals, scientists from the Yale Medical School have found, the results are published in the journal Nature Metabolism.
Researchers conducted a study using functional MRI, which tested how the brain responds to two types of nutrients: sugar and fat. In volunteers from the first group, the use of these elements led to a decrease in activity in several areas of the brain involved in the regulation of hunger, while in the participants from the second group there was no such reaction. Then the obese participants were enrolled in a 12-week weight loss program, and at its completion the experiment was repeated, but the lack of brain response to sugar and fat remained constant.
Experts have come to the conclusion that in people with obesity, the brain stops responding to signals of satiety, so they begin to eat even more. And after losing weight, the work of the brain is not restored, and people who have lost weight still do not experience a feeling of satiety. As a result, they still gain weight over time.
