The President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, reported that the border between Ecuador and Colombia will be reopened on Wednesday, December 15 and not on December 1, as planned.

The president made the announcement on the afternoon of Tuesday 30, after an agreement with the president of Colombia, Iván Duque.

On the night of Monday 29, Lasso indicated that the opening of the border crossings between the two countries would be progressive and would begin this Wednesday, December 1. However, this will happen two weeks later. This process would have three phases.

The first includes the passage of tractors that move imports and exports through the Rumichaca international bridge. This system was being carried out between 09:00 and 17:00, but by means of a presidential agreement, the entry of crew members up to 11 kilometers from the common border will be allowed.

The second phase, which was scheduled for December 31, included the opening of the pedestrian crossing on the San Miguel and Rumichaca bridges, according to the governor of Carchi, Yaco Martínez.

In the third phase, the viaducts will be opened to vehicular passage through the Pico y Placa system, according to the odd or even numbers.

Martínez explained that these phases will be evaluated by the authorities of the two countries, to preserve the health and economy of the border populations. (I)
