Germany is in favor of providing security guarantees to Ukraine, but is not yet ready to support the country’s accession to NATO. It is reported by The Telegraph, citing a source in the block.
According to media reports, at the upcoming NATO summit on July 11-12, Berlin will call on allies to delay Kyiv’s membership in the bloc over fears that this move could lead the alliance into an armed confrontation with Russia. Moscow may “test” Article 5 of the Washington Collective Defense Treaty, which stipulates that an attack on one of the members of the bloc will be considered an attack on all members, the newspaper notes.
The newspaper writes that the US, UK and EU countries are now preparing a series of bilateral security proposals that will help secure Kyiv.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that Ukraine’s accession to NATO could not be implemented before the end of the conflict with Russia. At the same time, the United States is ready to provide Israel-style security guarantees to Ukraine, Biden noted.
Ukraine applied for accelerated accession to NATO in September last year. At the same time, Moscow is seeking to consolidate the neutral status of Ukraine.
