If the United States decides to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions, then these will be modern and more effective shells. This was announced by Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder, reports AP.
The Pentagon has “a lot of options,” he said. “The ones we’re looking at don’t include older versions with UXO above 2.35%,” Ryder added, noting that the ammunition can be loaded with special armor-piercing rounds and is capable of hitting large numbers of fighters.
At the same time, Ryder noted that so far he has nothing to announce in connection with the possible supply of cluster munitions to Kyiv, since the issue has not been finally resolved.
According to Foreign Policy, Ukraine demanded cluster munitions long before the start of the counteroffensive. The munitions in question consist of containers that open in the air and scatter large numbers of small projectiles or submunitions. At the same time, the United States, Russia and Ukraine are not parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which prohibits their use, transfer and stockpiling.
We add that Moscow criticizes the West’s supply of weapons and ammunition to Kyiv.
