The US leader named the applicant, whom he considers the best candidate to lead NATO in 2024. The newspaper The Daily Telegraph writes about this, citing unnamed sources in the alliance.
According to media reports, Biden is promoting the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to this post. He allegedly “tried to convince a German politician to head NATO because of fears that a worthy replacement for the current Secretary General of the bloc, Jens Stoltenberg, could not be found in the next 12 months.”
The newspaper notes that Biden and von der Leyen have developed a “strong bond” in recent years that has strengthened transatlantic engagement on China, Ukraine and the climate. Moreover, von der Leyen is fluent in French and can provide her with support from French President Emmanuel Macron, media writes.
Recall that on July 4, Stoltenberg confirmed that he would remain in the post of NATO Secretary General until October 1, 2024. The reason for this decision was the difficulty in determining a candidate to replace Stoltenberg, the media noted.
