The peak of the holiday season is approaching, meanwhile the situation in some tourist regions of Poland is not optimistic. They found themselves in trouble this year – especially the owners of restaurants, boarding houses and hotels. It turns out that there are no tourists, but people willing to work.
The story goes on in circles
Highlanders faced a similar problem – although not as severe – in 2018. At that time, difficulties with finding seasonal workers were particularly visible in Podhale. -You have to think hard how to encourage employees from outside the European Union to come to uswork, and even settle down. In Zakopane, it is difficult to find a restaurant, tavern or hotel that would not be looking for employees – then the president of the Tatra Chamber of Commerce Agata Wojtowicz in an interview with tvn24.pl. After five years, the problem returns, although – according to Wojtowicz – this time “it’s even worse”.
There are no people willing to work. All because of 500 plus?
– Seasonal workers from Ukraine, who had done it before, did not come to us. (…) In every inn in Podhale, a piece of paper with a job offer was posted. And there are no takers – notes the president of TIG from money.pl. The specific nature of work in tourism – especially in gastronomy – can scare off many potential employees. The vision of busy weekends, staying up late and harsh conditions may not be particularly encouraging. However, it used to be much easier to find volunteers. Some speculate that this is due to Social benefits, including 500 plus.
– Students used to be a seasonal force, but they have long since disappeared. The Poles themselves are very good at dealing with social workers. Before the introduction of 500 plus, women from the surrounding villages were eager to do basic work. After a year of the program, they resigned from it and prefer to take social benefits. They will get 500 plus, so why bother with other things? – asks the head of TIG with a hint of irony in an interview with money.pl.
