Embassies and consulates of Latvia from July 4 will resume accepting applications for issuing visas to certain categories of Russian citizens. According to TASS with reference to local media, this decision was made by the country’s authorities after assessing the current security situation and consultations with neighboring countries and regional partners.
So, relatives of citizens of Latvia and persons with the status of non-citizens of the republic will be able to apply for a visa. Exceptions will also apply to relatives of citizens of EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
It will also be possible to apply for a visa for compelling humanitarian reasons, for example, in the event of a serious illness of a loved one or participation in a funeral.
The status of a non-citizen was assigned, in particular, in Latvia to residents of the former USSR who remained in the republic after gaining independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Citizens with this status are limited in their rights compared to a person with citizenship.
Earlier, the Latvian side stopped accepting applications from Russian citizens with a request for the issuance of visas of all types from June 26 against the backdrop of an attempted armed rebellion in the Russian Federation.
