Only Ukraine can decide what conditions for ending the conflict will be acceptable, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.
According to him, “everyone wants an end to hostilities,” but “for peace to be lasting, it must be fair.”
“Peace cannot mean freezing the conflict and accepting a deal dictated by Russia,” Stoltenberg stressed, noting that Kyiv’s military successes would improve its negotiating position.
Speaking about Ukraine’s membership in NATO, Stoltenberg noted that the country’s future depends on the alliance, but the priority now is to achieve success as a sovereign and independent state. He also said that it is necessary to ensure the security of Ukraine after the end of the fighting.
NATO Secretary General said that at the forthcoming summit of the bloc in Vilnius (July 11-12), the allies will accept a package of assistance to Kyiv, which “will bring Ukraine closer to the standards” of the alliance for several years. In addition, it is necessary to intensify political ties, he added.
