The size of the “sanitary zone” or “cordon sanitaire” in Ukraine will depend on the range of Ukrainian weapons from which Russian territory must be protected, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to a question about whether the possible boundaries of such a zone have been determined.

“No, it depends on what types of weapons Ukraine has. The higher the tactical and technical characteristics of weapons in Ukraine, the greater this distance should be, ”the Kremlin spokesman emphasized. “The main goal is clear: so that they do not reach Russian citizens with these weapons,” Peskov added.

As TASS reports, in response to a question whether the time for the creation of such a “sanitary zone” has been determined, Peskov noted that in fact this process has been going on “for a year and a half.” “There can be neither new nor old [„санитарной зоны“]there can only be one. [Это продолжение] the work that is being done,” the presidential press secretary explained.

Recall, on June 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Russian Federation, in the event of continued shelling of its regions, could consider creating a “sanitary zone” on the territory of Ukraine. Once again, the head of state returned to this topic at the plenary meeting of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on June 16, calling the proposed territory a “cordon sanitaire”.
