A peace agreement with Azerbaijan could be signed by the end of this year, Secretary of the Armenian Security Council Armen Grigoryan told journalists.

According to him, the negotiations are intensive. Grigoryan noted that the parties “achieved some progress” during the meeting of the heads of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Chisinau on June 1.

“Our mindset is that we find solutions, advance the peace agenda within those solutions, and conclude a peace agreement,” he said.

On June 1, Chisinau hosted a five-party meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, European Council President Charles Michel and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Issues related to the agreement on the settlement of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the security of the borders between the two countries, as well as the need to resolve the rights and security of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh were discussed at the meeting.

Negotiations on a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan have been going on for several years. On May 22, Pashinyan announced Yerevan’s readiness to recognize the entry of Nagorno-Karabakh, the status of which the countries disputed, as part of Azerbaijan.
