Ukraine sent Germany an official request to provide Taurus cruise missiles. It is reported by RBC with reference to Der Spiegel and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).
According to FAZ, the missile is capable of “reaching Moscow,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed them in early May during a meeting in Berlin. Der Spiegel writes that Kyiv sent a request in recent days, but the Ministry of Defense did not specify how many missiles the Ukrainian army requested.
Member of the foreign policy committee of the Bundestag, Roderich Kizewetter, called for the transfer of Taurus missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in May. “Ukraine’s partners must now go for broke and provide Ukraine with everything that Ukraine can use in combined arms combat and that is permitted by international law,” he said. The politician said that ten years ago, about 600 Taurus missiles were purchased for the German army, and only 150 of them are in service. Kizevetter considered that it would be wiser to send them to Kyiv instead of storing them.
The German Ministry of Defense then doubted the fidelity of such a decision. Minister Boris Pistorius declined to comment on the proposals, but noted that support for the Ukrainian army must be responsible.
