North Korea has condemned South Korea and the United States for planning to hold a major joint live-fire military exercise next week. It is reported by Interfax with reference to the TsTAK.
The statement said that Washington and Seoul “continuously carry out all kinds of military exercises against the DPRK and thereby seriously threaten peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and in the region.”
It is noted that the new military exercises will be held in an area remote from the North Korean front just a few kilometers.
“We are monitoring every military action by hostile forces that seriously destroys and threatens security on the Korean Peninsula and in the region,” Pyongyang said. They warned that the actions of the United States and South Korea would entail appropriate countermeasures.
“In response to the current serious situation and future threats, it is the legitimate right of a sovereign state to have powerful means for self-defense,” the message emphasizes.
South Korea and the United States are scheduled to conduct exercises from May 25 to June 15 to mark the 70th anniversary of their alliance. These are expected to feature advanced weapon systems including F-35A stealth fighters, AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, K2 tanks and Chunmoo multiple launch rocket systems.
