The latest “Indiana Jones” after its premiere in Cannes! We describe the first reviews

“Indiana Jones and the Shield of Destiny” is one of the most anticipated premieres of this year. The fifth part of the film with Harrison Ford in the lead role will appear in cinemas at the end of June, but the lucky few can already see it during the Cannes Film Festival. What are the first opinions?

“Indiana Jones and the Artifact of Destiny” is the first film in the cult series not directed by Steven Spielberg, but by James Mangold, who also wrote the screenplay. The creator of “ET” this time only became the producer of the film, as did the other creator of this series, i.e. George Lucas, but the same creator, i.e. John Williams, is responsible for the music. The production will be released in cinemas on June 30, and had its world premiere on Thursday, May 18 at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film was screened out of competition.

How is Indiana Jones ending his career?

While most of the action in the fifth film will take place in 1969 during the space race between the US and the USSR, the production opens with a sequence in 1944, 12 years after the events of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Harrison Ford reprises his role as the famous archaeologist and adventurer. This time, however, the 80-year-old actor has been digitally rejuvenated. To reinforce the illusion, old materials with the actor and a special prop: the original Ford jacket from the first part of the series. The legendary actor mentioned that this was the last time he played the role of the famous archaeologist and adventurer.

Little has been said about the film so far, but the first critics to see it at Cannes shared their first impressions on social media. Many of them believe that there is a lot of sentiment in “Artifact of Destiny”, so it may not match the first three films in the series.

In Stephanie Bunbury’s review from “” we can read that despite the fact that the action in the film takes place very quickly, its foundations are built of reassuring nostalgia. “Just hearing John Williams’s score, another variation on the heroism and theater of the original, makes anyone of a certain age feel that all is well with the world at this point,” reads the review.

However, James Mottram from the British portal points out that the very challenge that Jones faces in this film is much more important than in “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”. At the same time, he describes the last adventure of the archaeologist in the series as somewhat safe, but still pleasant and old-school.

However, Robbie Collin of “” gave the film only two stars out of five. What he appreciates most about the performance of the 80-year-old actor: “Ford gives it his all – but while the three original films were full of plot twists, this fifth part is painfully lacking in spark.”

Much more forgiving was a short review by a journalist from “”, in which we read that the production is filled with action, laughter and charm. Alex Ritman of “” reports that he “really liked” the film.

In addition to Harrison Ford, the film will feature a range of new actors

The cast of the latest installment of Indiana Jones will see many new characters. One of them is Helena – the main character’s goddaughter, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The antagonist of the production is Mads Mikkelsen, who played the main role in the Oscar-winning “Rauszu”. In “Shield of Destiny” he will play the role of Voller, inspired by the story of Wernher von Braun – a rocket designer working for Hitler’s army, who co-created the US space program after World War II. The film also starred Antonio Banderas, Boyd Holbrook and Toby Jones.
