US President Joe Biden discussed with his French counterpart his visit to China and the conflict in Ukraine, the press service of the White House reports.
The Élysée Palace statement following the telephone conversations emphasized that “China has a role to play in helping to end the [украинского] conflict in accordance with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations”. It is noted that “the heads of the two states agreed on the importance of continuing interaction with the Chinese authorities on this basis.”
Biden and Macron also discussed work to “promote prosperity, security and a rules-based world order in the Indo-Pacific.” In addition, the presidents reaffirmed the importance of “maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait” and “unshakable support for Ukraine.”
Macron visited China and held talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in early April. At a joint press conference, the leaders called for talks between Russia and Ukraine to begin “as soon as possible.”
