Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljungkvist considers it most likely that an organization associated with state structures was behind the Nord Stream bombings in the Baltic. It is reported by Interfax with reference to the AP.

The prosecutor warned that it is still not clear who blew up the pipes, and made it clear that this may never be found out.

“All things considered, our main line of investigation is that some state is behind the incidents,” Ljungqvist said.

The prosecutor clarified in an interview with TT that a strike of this level required significant resources and skills. He “does not exclude the possibility that there are non-state actors capable of committing such acts,” but “in this case, you will have to deal with a very small number of companies or groups.”

The investigation has no doubt that this is a large-scale sabotage in international waters, committed against infrastructure whose owner is not associated with Sweden. Ljungkvist stressed that the Swedish investigation is primarily focused on whether this incident poses a threat to Sweden’s interests or its security, for example, whether Swedish territory was used in the preparation of a terrorist attack.

He assured that all the evidence found would be carefully studied, the investigation would check everything and try not to miss anything. “We hope that we can find out who committed this crime and confirm his involvement, but it must be emphasized that in the current circumstances this will probably be extremely difficult to do,” he said.

Ljungkvist did not give an approximate timeline for the investigation.
