The North Korean authorities launched a campaign to save marriages. According to Kommersant with reference to local media, explanatory and educational work is being carried out among married women in the country. The authorities also put some pressure on the parents of divorcing spouses and on companies or organizations whose employees have a high divorce rate.
So, one of the residents of the province of Hamgyongbukto told reporters that divorces are “directly related to the problem of making a living”, and this is becoming increasingly difficult after the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
It is noted that in most North Korean families, women are the main breadwinners. The fact is that men are employed in those jobs where they are sent by the authorities, and most often these are low-paid jobs. Women, on the other hand, can earn extra money, for example, by trading in the market, and earn more.
Meanwhile, spouses who want to get a divorce are also called to meetings where they criticize and explain to them how wrong they are going to do, calling for building a “harmonious family, a unit of society.” Parents of divorcing spouses are also called to these meetings. They are accused of bad parenting.
