The situation around the Zaporizhzhya NPP has recently worsened, which has increased the risk of an incident in the nuclear sphere. According to Interfax with reference to the Associated Press, this was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
“My experts report daily attacks, sounds of heavy weapons being used. It happens almost all the time,” Grossi said.
He noted that although the last time the nuclear power plant was subjected to direct shelling last November, however, strikes are still being made on the territory surrounding the facility.
Grossi specified that negotiations on “various scenarios that could lead” to the creation of a security zone around the nuclear power plant are ongoing, and that he has discussed the situation at the highest level with both the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
“So the ongoing military operations are affecting the negotiations. I would not say that the negotiation process over the past few months has not led to any success, ”said the head of the IAEA.
At the end of last week, Grossi announced that he intended to visit the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to assess the situation in the field of nuclear safety. Another goal of the current trip of the head of the IAEA will be to ensure the maintenance and improvement of the regular rotation of the agency’s staff at the facility. The visit was scheduled for March 29th. Grossi has already visited the Zaporozhye NPP on September 1, 2022.
The day before, he said that he visited the Dnieper hydroelectric power station and met with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
