Prior to this, Meladze’s concerts were canceled in a number of other Russian cities, including Rostov-on-Don and Krasnoyarsk, as well as in Barvikha near Moscow.
Valery Meladze was one of the first Russian artists to call for an end to the fighting in Ukraine. Senator Elena Afanasyeva called for the singer to be deprived of citizenship, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Culture Elena Drapeko proposed to recognize the singer as a foreign agent and “ban him from entering Russia.” Meladze himself, in response to this, stated that he dreams of ending the “antagonism” between “close peoples.”
