NATO military leaders will present an updated regional defense plan in the spring, for its implementation it will be necessary to increase the number of military personnel to 300 thousand, RBC reports with reference to Politico.

“I think you need forces to face a realistic Russia,” a senior military official said, adding that the alliance would need more troops to do so.

Now countries are concerned about their own stockpiles of weapons, while Ukraine needs more ammunition and weapons, so it is likely that not all countries in the bloc are ready to implement new NATO plans.

“If you throw a feast and don’t say what to bring, everyone will bring potato chips because potato chips are cheap and easy to get,” said James Townsend, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy. “Countries would rather bring potato chips,” he added.

NATO’s first echelon could have around 100,000 troops ready to deploy within ten days. They could be recruited from Poland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, said former NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defense Planning Heinrich Brauss. The second echelon is reinforcements, that is, the military sent for support, they must be ready for transfer, for example from Germany, within 10-30 days. To achieve the goal, some countries will have to increase recruitment, many – to increase defense spending, and all – to buy more weapons, ammunition and equipment, the newspaper notes.
