China will strongly oppose foreign interference in the Taiwan issue and separatist activities aimed at the island’s independence. According to TASS, Chinese President Xi Jinping said this at the closing ceremony of the first session of the National People’s Congress (the country’s parliament) of the 14th convocation.
“We must firmly adhere to the One China principle and abide by the 1992 consensus, vigorously promote the peaceful development of relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, and resolutely oppose foreign interference and separatist activities aimed at “Taiwan independence,” he said.
China intends to steadily advance the process of reunification with Taiwan, Xi Jinping said. “It is necessary to steadily advance the process of reunification of the motherland,” he said.
Taiwan, the largest Chinese island, has been governed by its own administration since 1949. Official Beijing considers the island one of the Chinese provinces.
Tensions around Taiwan escalated following an August 2022 visit by then-Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taipei. The day after its completion, the People’s Liberation Army of China launched large-scale rocket firing maneuvers in six zones of the island’s waters.
