Long-term alcohol abuse adversely affects health and adversely affects the state of the body. This was stated to Doctor Peter by FMBA doctor Ekaterina Danilina.

According to her, alcoholic beverages harm the digestive system, in particular the liver, pancreas and gallbladder, as well as blood vessels, the heart, and the nervous system. The reason is the effect on metabolic processes, since alcohol slows down metabolism.

The expert explains that the energy received from drinking alcohol is added to the calories from the food eaten. As a result, a positive energy balance is created in the human body, which stimulates weight gain. But there are nuances.

“Based on the available research, we can say that weight gain occurs with excessive alcohol consumption, while light and moderate alcohol consumption is negatively associated with weight gain,” says Ekaterina Danilina.

She explained that this refers not only to the amount of alcohol, but also the frequency of consumption. In moderation – this is less than 30 grams per day (for women – 20 g) – a glass of wine or a bottle of beer and no more than 7 servings per week.

“If you drink more than the minimum dose of alcohol, then a person receives 75 percent or more of the energy he spends per day,” says Ekaterina Danilina.

Light to moderate alcohol consumption is generally not associated with weight gain, she says. With excessive alcohol consumption for 10 weeks, the weight increases by 1 kg, which seems quite insignificant, but at such a rate in 5 years you can recover by 26 kg without compensation. At the same time, according to research data, the greatest weight gain occurs with the systematic use of beer.

“It is still impossible to say unequivocally whether alcohol contributes to food intake in the absence of hunger; however, it has been noted that alcohol can increase appetite in response to food stimuli, explains the doctor. But the data is contradictory. For example, it is known that through the hormonal system, alcohol affects not the feeling of hunger, but the feeling of satiety, dulling it. But there is also evidence that alcohol affects the nervous system, stimulating the “central” genesis of appetite.
