An American E-6B Mercury aircraft has landed in Iceland, serving as the air command post of the US Navy during the operations of the European forces of the American army, the headquarters of the command of US forces in Europe said on its social media page.
The report said the plane’s crew met with US Ambassador to Iceland Karrin Patman “and other diplomatic and military leaders.”
The E-6B Mercury has been referred to as the “doomsday aircraft” because it is an airborne command and communications post that must play a key role in a nuclear war situation. The aircraft allows the American command to communicate with strategic and non-strategic weapons, in particular, with a nuclear arsenal, the Pentagon description says. In particular, thanks to the airborne launch control system (ALCS), it is possible to launch ground-based ballistic missiles.
Recall, on the eve of February 28, Russia suspended participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with the United States.
