10 years of Spotify in Poland. How have the tastes of Poles changed?
In 2022, Polish songs on Spotify were played in the world until 17 billion times, which is an impressive result compared to 179 million plays at the end of 2013. In the first year of Spotify’s operation in Poland, there were only five songs by local artists in the Top 100 charts. In 2022, that number increased to 76.
In the years 2013-2017, Polish Spotify users most often listened to foreign artists, but six years ago the trend began to change. The turning point was 2018, when four of the five most streamed artists on Polish Spotify were native artists. This group includes: , Quebonafide, the Taconafide duo and . In recent years, more and more Polish artists have appeared on the playlists of Spotify users abroad. After 10 years of the platform on the Polish market, the audience of our native artists outside our country has increased by 700 percent.
The statistics also show how much the tastes of Poles have changed over the last 10 years. When Spotify launched on the Polish market, the inhabitants of our country loved rock. Today, they choose Polish rap more often.
The most important dates in the history of Spotify in Poland
- June 2013 – Dawid Podsiadło became the first Polish artist to reach 500,000 plays in one month,
- May 2015 – the first Polish-language podcast appeared on Spotify (in 2022 the number grew to almost 20,000),
- December 2015 – the first “Year in Music” summary, today known as Spotify Wrapped, was created,
- April 2017 – Spotify for Artists is launched to help creators reach a wider audience,
- October 2017 – the first editorial playlists appear in Poland, which support the discovery of new artists with an emphasis on local ones,
- April 2021 – Spotify launches the EQUAL Polska program, which supports Polish artists. So far, more than 20 artists have participated in the initiative.
