Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic announced his candidacy for a third presidential term. It is reported by TASS.
Presidential elections in Montenegro will be held on March 19.
“My candidacy is on the table. My candidacy is an expression of responsibility to Montenegro. My goal is to win the first round, but I will remain enthusiastic if it comes to the second round,” said the president, who was broadcast on national television.
The President of Montenegro is elected by popular vote for a five-year term. Djukanovic served as prime minister five times (1991-1998, 2003-2006, 2008-2010, 2012-2016), and was also the country’s president from 1998 to 2002 and was elected for a second term in 2018. His total tenure now stands at 32 years, bringing Djukanovic closer to the record at the top of Zimbabwe’s leader Robert Mugabe, who led the country for 40 years.
According to the constitution, Montenegro is a parliamentary republic, and the head of state performs mainly representative functions. Nevertheless, the figure of the president is of great importance in the formation of the cabinet of ministers and the nomination of the prime minister. According to the country’s constitution, the president of Montenegro cannot hold this post for more than two consecutive terms.
