This November 19, the full Moon will partially disappear as the Earth’s shadow covers it.

This November 19, the world will witness the second partial lunar eclipse of the year. This will last 3 hours and 28 minutes, making it the longest of the entire century. After this date, you will have to wait until May 15, 2022 for the next lunar eclipse.

The shadow of the Earth will cover more than 97% of the surface of the Moon causing a reddish tone popularly known as ‘Blood Moon’.

The partial lunar eclipse will be completely visible from several countries in the world, including Mexico, the United States, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and half the territory of Argentina and Brazil.

To observe the lunar eclipse, you do not need any type of eye protection. Nor do you need any optical instrument to observe.

Normally, for a total eclipse, it only takes about an hour for the Moon to fully move into the Earth’s shadow. However, for this eclipse, it will take noticeably longer: about 104 minutes.

The eclipse

  • The eclipse will begin at 00:02 on November 19, little by little the Moon will gradually begin to darken.
  • One hour and fifteen minutes later, at 01:18, the Moon will begin its transit over the umbra, causing it to darken suddenly and reflecting a reddish hue on the surface.
