British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has privately asked ministers and officials to work out plans to restore relations between London and Brussels. It is reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.

The agency indicates that we are talking about a closer partnership in the areas of defense, migration policy, as well as in the field of economization of foreign policy. As one of the bases for improving relations with the EU, the UK is considering resolving the dispute over trade agreements for Northern Ireland.

In 2016, the UK held a referendum on the country’s membership in the EU (it has been a member of the union since 1973). As a result, more than 51.9% of those who voted were in favor of Brexit, and formally the United Kingdom ceased to be a member of the European Union from February 1, 2020, but until January 1, 2021, a transitional period was provided when the country continued to follow EU rules.

In December 2020, the parties agreed on a trade and cooperation agreement, which determined the terms of the partnership after the complete separation of Britain from the union. However, problematic issues remained – in particular, regarding Northern Ireland.

Under the treaty, this part of the United Kingdom remained included in the customs territory of the EU – in this way it was possible to avoid the appearance of a border between it and the independent Republic of Ireland, which is part of the European Union. However, this forced the British authorities to impose controls on food products entering Northern Ireland from other parts of Britain.
