The Chinese Ministry of Defense announced the unjustified destruction of a “civilian balloon” by US military forces over North Carolina. This is reported by Xinhua with reference to the department.
“The use of force by the United States is clearly an overreaction and a serious violation of international practice,” China’s defense ministry said in a statement. It is clarified that the PRC reserves the right to apply additional response measures in connection with the incident.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed strong protest to the United States in connection with the destruction of the probe. The foreign ministry said in a statement that the Chinese side asked Washington to resolve the issue “calmly, professionally and with restraint.”
The American authorities consider the balloon to be part of the Chinese tracking program.
On February 4, the US military shot down a Chinese balloon off the coast of North Carolina. In territorial waters, an operation was carried out to raise the wreckage of a balloon, the size of which, according to the Associated Press, is comparable to “three school buses.” The fact that the probe may be part of China’s broad spy program was reported by Bloomberg, citing US officials.
