The Minister of Sports and Tourism of Poland, Kamil Bortnichuk, said that about 40 countries are going to oppose the possible participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. It is reported by RBC with reference to the PAP agency.
According to Bortnichuk, a meeting of sports ministers from about 40 countries, including the EU, the UK, Australia, Canada, South Korea and Japan, will take place on February 10, following which a “common, strong position” will be formed.
“Of course, this will be a strong position that will resist the participation of representatives of Russia and Belarus in the Olympic Games,” Bortnichuk said.
Commenting on the position of Ukraine and Latvia, which admitted the possibility of a boycott of the Olympics due to the possible admission of Russians and Belarusians, Bortnichuk said that “this is always the strongest card.” “I think that these countries will use it without hesitation,” the minister added.
“I would give the IOC a chance to reflect without pushing them against the wall. We still have time, the Olympics will be held in the middle of next year. Instead of immediately humiliating partners, you must first give them a chance to reflect, ”concluded Bortnichuk.
