British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak removed Nadhim Zahavi from his post as chairman of the Conservative Party and removed him from the cabinet for violations of ministerial ethics. This is stated in the message Sunak sent to Zahavi, published by The Daily Mail.
“At the end of an independent investigation, it turned out that there were serious violations of the ministerial code. As a result, I inform about the decision to remove you from the government of His Majesty,” the message says.
Zahavi served as a “minister without portfolio” in Sunak’s government.
During the investigation, it turned out that Zahavi, while holding a government post, made a number of violations in the field of taxation.
Earlier in January, there were reports in the press that Zahavi might have failed to pay taxes on the 2018 sale of his stake in YouGov. Formally, the £27m shares were owned by Balshore Investments Limited in Gibraltar, which is controlled by Zahavi’s parents. But if he was the real beneficiary of the transaction, then there is a fact of tax evasion.
This is the second resignation in Sunak’s cabinet, who took office on October 25, 2022. In November, Minister Without Portfolio Gavin Williamson stepped down amid allegations of mistreatment of other members of the ruling Conservative Party.
