Disagreements arose in the German government over the decision of Chancellor Olaf Scholz to supply battle tanks to Ukraine, RBC reports citing German media.

The head of the Bundestag’s defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, reportedly demanded that the head of government make “clear” statements about Ukraine’s military support. According to her, if the country’s leadership does not want to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv, then “it must explain why,” since the discussion about the supply of tanks “does not represent Germany in a good light.”

In response, the chairman of the faction of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Rolf Mützenich, noted that on the issue of the supply of German combat vehicles, it is necessary to be guided by clarity and common sense, since “those who talk about tanks today will talk about aircraft or troops tomorrow.”

Germany has repeatedly stated that it will not supply tanks to Ukraine alone. Scholz explained the refusal by the fact that the FRG does not want to bring the conflict to a war between Russia and NATO. Nevertheless, a number of European countries, where Leopards are in service, expressed their readiness to transfer them to Kyiv as part of an international coalition. In particular, such statements were made by Poland and Finland. However, this requires permission from Berlin.
