Driving a vehicle without license plates or with altered ones is a fourth class offense and the penalty is the payment of 35% of a unified basic salary ($148.75) and a reduction of 6 points on the license.

The Ecuadorian Automotive Association (AEA) reports that there are a total of 35,900 car plates and 31,400 motorcycles available to be withdrawn in Guayaquil.

“There are already certain number plates for people to pick up,” says Manuel Murtinho, manager of the AEA.

This is important, he adds, because of the level of insecurity in the city. “The problem is that some people want to circulate without license plates to avoid fines, but that is beyond all consideration.”

The delivery of the new plates is carried out at the North Registration Center of the Municipal Transit Authority (ATM), next to the Río Daule Station of the Metrovía, in the north of Guayaquil.

The schedule is from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00.

On Mondays you can pick up the plates that end in 1 and 2; on Tuesdays, at 3 and 4; on Wednesdays, at 5 and 6; Thursdays, at 7 and 8; and on Fridays, at 9 and 0.

Plate removal requirements

  • Original vehicle registration.
  • Citizenship card (original and current).
  • Temporary paper plates (mandatory).
  • Plate withdrawal form, document that is filled out at the time of delivery.

In the case of vehicles that are in the name of companies, the appointment of the representative and the RUC certificate are required.

In the case of Guayaquil, you can check if your metal plate is already available by creating an account on the ATM website, at the following link: www.atm.gob.ec
