Participants of the UN climate meeting were dissatisfied with the final declaration

The UN climate meeting (COP27) completed its work in Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday night, two days later than planned, as the participants had difficulties with agreeing on the final declaration, Interfax writes.

As a result, many participants of the meeting were dissatisfied with its results. In particular, they were disappointed that the final declaration did not include a clause on the need for a sharp reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Thus, UN Secretary General António Guterres said that the planet Earth “continues to remain in the intensive care unit,” since the issue of limiting emissions was not discussed at the meeting.

In turn, British Secretary of State for Industry, Energy and Industrial Strategy Alok Sharma also noted that the text of the declaration contains nothing about the need to limit emissions until 2025, about reducing the use of coal and other fossil fuels.

Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and head of the EU negotiating team at COP27, also announced the failure of the meeting. According to him, the document “does not say enough about the additional efforts that should be taken by the main countries that emit the maximum volumes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.”

Let us recall that earlier it was reported that the final declaration included an agreement to establish a fund to support countries most affected by climate change.
