Guayaquil dressed in the colors of the LGBTI group flag on pride day

The colors of the famous flag of the LGBTI group worldwide were reflected on the facades of six monuments and symbols of the city of Guayaquil during the night of June 28.

The lighting of the emblematic monuments of the city with the colors of the LGBTI+ flag occurred after a request made by the Silueta X Association to the Guayaquil Mayor’s Office.

The places were: The Lighthouse of the City, Puente El Velero, Torre Morisca, Municipal Palace, La Perla and the Hemiciclo de la Rotonda, on the boardwalk. The same will happen during the night of this Saturday, July 2, when the gay pride march is scheduled to take place if the situation of the protests allows it, says Diane Rodríguez, director of the National Federation of LGBTIQ+ Organizations (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer).

Every June 28, gay pride day is commemorated after the rebellion of the LGBTI community against the repressive actions of the New York Police, a fact that occurred on that day in 1969.

In a statement, the leadership called on the different institutions to join the event in Guayaquil and collaborate with its development. “We will keep you informed in the following days of the development of our festivities. If the strike is not given, in the same way, we will inform you duly and through our official channels ”, indicates the bulletin.

The pride day march in Guayaquil got the endorsement of INTERPRIDE, the international pride organization, which will give the city greater tourist and cultural visibility, says Rodríguez.

It will be the usual route that covers part of the boardwalk from the La Bahía sector, advances along Nueve de Octubre avenue to Centennial Park. “However, the social and political conditions of the country with the National Strike could force us to cancel it in the following days,” recalls the statement.

This event was scheduled to take place on the previous June 25 but was suspended in Cuenca, Ambato, Portoviejo, Quito, Milagro, Tumbaco, Durán and Santa Elena, due to protestsaffirms Rodríguez, who is the representative in Latin America of Interpride (World Organization of Pride).

The LGBTIQ+ pride march, which has not been held in the streets since 2019, was suspended this month for the third consecutive year in some cities of Ecuador, now due to protests. (YO)
