He adds that the bread is fundamental, it has to be of good quality and very crispy. “To make it crispier, the type of bread making is very important and if it is possible to make the dough with olive oil.”

“For me, the most popular is the ham and cheese, and the traditional club sandwich (chicken, cheese, ham, bacon, lettuce and tomato) that is eaten hot. Although everyone can create their own sandwich with their favorite ingredients and eat it hot or cold”, highlights the expert.

“In addition to the protein (animal or vegetable), it must have a fatty part so that it causes satiety and is easy to digest, for example, mashed avocado as guacamole or a Greek yogurt dressing with olive oil and mustard. Also add vegetables, the ones you have at home, and finally put them to toast on both sides in a sandwich box or frying pan, ”he emphasizes.

Origin of the sandwich

Its most popular origin dates back to 18th century England, when John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich and inveterate gambler, asked for some slices of roast beef between two slices of bread. That way he could eat without interrupting the game. That’s where its name comes from.

Also, historian Edward Gibbon recorded in one of his diaries from 1762 that he was surprised to see two aristocrats in a cafeteria eating something they called a sandwich: cold meat between two thin slices of bread, while they drank punch and discussed the political situation.

There is also talk of a humble origin, because in the popular classes the sandwich was widely used as lunch away from home, due to its ease of transport.

The truth is that, whatever its origin, this dish has crossed borders and is one of the favorites in homes.
