Nine civilians were killed and 33 others injured in a Russian missile strike on Kyiv in the early hours of August 1, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said. Four of the wounded were children.
Rescuers pulled 105 people to safety, deploying 206 personnel and 42 vehicles before declaring the operation complete by evening.
Four city districts were affected: Solomyansky, Darnytsky, Shevchenkivsky, and Holosiivsky. Russia struck the city’s medical transport service twice, burning five ambulances and partially destroying four buildings, though staff were unharmed. Police received 278 property damage reports.
Nearly 9,500 people sheltered in the metro during the alert, according to the Kyiv city administration.
President Zelensky said Ukrainian air defence managed to destroy only one of the 27 ballistic missiles fired, due to a shortage of Patriot interceptors. He said Ukraine depends on decisions by US President Donald Trump for supplies of the missiles, which are the only systems effective against ballistic threats.
