Maisie Williams attended the London premiere of Practical Magic 2 wearing a loosely styled high updo that recalled late 1990s trends.

The British actress, who rose to global prominence playing Arya Stark in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, stepped onto the red carpet with a hairstyle that combined a high bun with loose strands around her face. The intentionally undone finish marked a departure from the sleek looks that have dominated recent seasons.

Jillian Halouska styled the look. The hairstylist gathered the hair of Williams at the crown, twisting and pinning various sections into place.

Halouska deliberately left rebellious strands visible rather than hiding them to avoid a perfect result. The aim was to give the hair movement and make it look as though it had been casually gathered, despite the professional technique involved.

Sandra Bullock inspiration

The 1999 inspiration for the look was a deliberate choice. Williams plays the daughter of Sandra Bullock's character in Practical Magic 2, the upcoming sequel to the 1998 film about a family of witches.

The original Practical Magic, in which Academy Award winner Bullock starred alongside Nicole Kidman as the magical Owens sisters, has developed a cult following since its release.

Williams appears to be using the promotional tour for the new film to pay tribute to the past red carpet appearances of her fictional mother.

For the London premiere, Williams wore a burgundy dress by designer Ellie Misner. The garment reinterpreted the outfit Bullock wore to the premiere of her romantic comedy Forces of Nature in 1999. Bullock starred alongside Ben Affleck in the film.

Williams matched her makeup to the tribute, wearing reddish tones similar to the original look Bullock wore. The relaxed 1990s hairstyle completed the coordinated homage to the veteran actress.

The 1990s hair revival

The casual updo worn by Williams aligns with a wider resurgence of 1990s beauty trends. Looser, more playful styles are replacing the tight, flawless buns that have been popular in recent years.

Model Bella Hadid wore a voluminous updo inspired by Pamela Anderson earlier this year. Anderson became a 1990s pop culture icon through her role in the television series Baywatch and her signature big hair.

Celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Anya Taylor-Joy and Rihanna have also been seen wearing their own versions of 1990s hairstyles recently.
