Legendary NBA coach Don Nelson has died at the age of 86, his family announced.
Nelson passed away peacefully on Sunday morning surrounded by his family, according to a report by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. His family stated that friends and relatives spent his final week surrounding him with love, sharing his friendship, and recalling precious memories.
Coaching Career and Titles
Nelson recorded 1,335 victories in the NBA across 31 seasons. He served as head coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks, earning the NBA Coach of the Year award three times.
He also played a major role in establishing small-ball tactics in the league. Although Nelson did not win an NBA championship as a head coach, he won five titles as a player, all with the Boston Celtics.
