Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil turned 25 years old this week, and the Namco platformer remains without a direct sequel despite earning a Metacritic score of 91 at the time of its release.
The game launched on PlayStation 2 on 25 July 2001, arriving alongside titles such as Grand Theft Auto III and Halo: Combat Evolved. Critics placed it on par with many of those releases, praising its blend of three-dimensional environments and two-dimensional platforming gameplay.
The title followed a character named Klonoa through dream-themed worlds, combining precise controls with a wide variety of stages and a soundtrack that fans still cite as one of its most memorable elements.
Despite the critical reception, sales were not strong enough to persuade Namco to continue the main series. Instead of a third instalment, the franchise produced only spin-off titles before fading from prominence.
Namco did revisit the property in later years. A remaster of the first two games was released and well received, demonstrating that interest in the series had not fully disappeared.
Even so, a quarter of a century after Lunatea’s Veil, Klonoa 3 does not exist. A remake has been suggested as a possible path toward reviving the franchise and finally delivering the third entry many players have been waiting for.
