Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that negotiations have opened with actor Johnny Depp for a starring role in the next Pirates of the Caribbean film.
Bruckheimer announced the discussions this week, marking the first concrete step toward bringing Depp back into the Disney franchise after months of industry speculation. Bruckheimer had previously confirmed that a return was possible, but no formal steps had been taken until now.
Although Disney had previously closed the door on working with Depp, studio executives are now said to be eager to reach a new agreement with the star actor.
According to Hollywood insider reports, the decision now rests with Depp himself. If the actor agrees to collaborate with Disney again, audiences could see Captain Jack Sparrow on the big screen once more.
Multiple projects in development
Disney is currently preparing multiple Pirates of the Caribbean projects simultaneously. As a result, it remains unclear which specific version of the script has been offered to Depp.
Earlier reports indicated that one proposed story would focus on the son of Jack Sparrow. Industry sources also reported that another main character in the movie would be a female pirate portrayed by Margot Robbie.
Depp returning to negotiations could alter those plans. However, reports suggest Disney has also evaluated combining both storylines to pair Robbie and Depp together in the same feature film.
History of the swashbuckling franchise
Johnny Depp first played Captain Jack Sparrow in the 2003 blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. His performance earned him an Academy Award nomination and launched one of cinema's most popular characters.
Jerry Bruckheimer has produced all five films in the fantasy swashbuckler series for Walt Disney Pictures. The franchise has grossed more than 4.5 billion dollars at the global box office since its debut.
Margot Robbie is an Australian actress and producer known for her roles in major Hollywood productions. Disney has not announced an official release date for the project.
