At least five people have died across Indiana after severe storms and historic flooding struck the U.S. state this week, Governor Mike Braun announced in a press briefing.
Dozens of residents have been rescued from flooded areas while hundreds more were forced to evacuate their homes urgently, according to reporting by The Indianapolis Star newspaper.
Severe weather began battering Indiana on August 11, Braun said in an official statement detailing the disaster. The governor described the events as historic flooding accompanied by tornadic activity and a derecho, a term used for an extensive, long-duration windstorm.
State Emergency Response and Federal Assistance
Braun assured the public that Indiana maintains sufficient local resources and reserve funds to navigate the difficult days ahead for the state. However, the governor confirmed that the severity of the damage required federal intervention.
Writing on the social media platform X, Braun stated that he had requested a Presidential Emergency Declaration through the Federal Emergency Management Agency to bring additional federal resources to Indiana. He added that he would continue doing everything within his power to protect Hoosier lives and livelihoods.
President Donald Trump approved the emergency declaration request, The Indianapolis Star reported hours later. Under U.S. federal procedures, a presidential emergency declaration enables the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the government body responsible for disaster response, to coordinate and provide direct federal relief funds to affected communities.
Inundation Along the White River in Indianapolis
In Indianapolis, the state capital, heavy rainfall on Saturday caused severe flooding in neighborhoods along the White River, a major waterway flowing through central Indiana. Emergency personnel rescued dozens of residents along with their pets as water levels continued to rise across the area.
Video footage shared by weather monitoring outlets showed merchandise from an Indiana store floating away through flooded streets after intense rainfall inundated the region. Millions of residents experienced heavy rain and severe storms throughout the week, resulting in multiple water rescues and widespread damage.

Derechos and tornadic storm systems are known to cause extreme straight-line winds and rapid rainfall across the Midwestern region of the United States. Atmospheric instability in late summer can produce prolonged storm fronts that quickly overflow local drainage systems and rivers.
