Hungary is facing a critical five-day period as a new heatwave is forecast to coincide with the complete shutdown of the country’s only nuclear power plant, Prime Minister Peter Magyar warned on Sunday.

Magyar said the electricity grid and public services would come under enormous pressure in the coming days. He called on companies, local governments, and households to drastically reduce electricity consumption during peak evening hours, according to a post he made on Facebook.

It is the first time in approximately 50 years that the plant has been taken fully offline, Magyar said.
