“The opportunity didn’t come and he put his head down,” says Courtois of Hazard’s situation at Real Madrid

Without entering the field since the beginning of January, in the match against Cacereño for the Copa del Rey, Eden Hazard is considered one of the most disappointing signings in the history of the Real Madrid. Courtois, the striker’s partner in the Spanish team and in the Belgian national team, commented on Eden’s situation at a press conference.

“When Hazard returned from the World Cup, he trained very well and was waiting for an opportunity, as the Brazilians weren’t back yet. The opportunity didn’t come and he lowered his head. He never lacked respect for anything”, stated the Belgian goalkeeper.

In the last game in which he played, Hazard did not play the 90 minutes and was replaced by Álvaro Rodríguez. However, Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti promised the Belgian striker that more opportunities would come, which did not happen.

The coach commented on his relationship with the Belgian: “The relationship is not cold. I was very honest, we didn’t speak much. Often it’s a matter of character, you get along better with one person than with another. That’s the most important for me, even if we don’t talk much and he doesn’t play, he respects me. I value that a lot and I respect him in the same way”.

Eden Hazard was the main signing for the 2019-2020 season for a European club, having cost 115 million euros (R$ 645 million at current quotations). The Belgian was one of the best players in the world, coming from great seasons at Chelsea – the club for which he is an idol – and had the dream of playing for Real Madrid.

However, things didn’t go the best way. Problems with his weight and injuries hindered his time in Madrid. In all, there were 73 matches for the Spanish club, only seven goals scored and 11 assists.
