Left-wing influencer Hasan Piker has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic politicians ahead of the 2026 midterm elections following controversial comments about Israel.
The 35-year-old political commentator, who has more than three million followers on the live-streaming platform Twitch, is facing accusations of antisemitism after remarks he made concerning Jewish supporters of Israel.
Republicans have seized on the controversy as Democrats work to regain control of at least one chamber of the United States Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
Representative Debbie Dingell, a Democratic congresswoman from Michigan, expressed frustration over the ongoing debate on Wednesday, August 26, stating that she was fed up and no longer wished to be asked about Piker by reporters.
Democratic politicians distance themselves
Piker, who describes himself as a socialist and anti-imperialist, regularly discusses politics on his daily webcasts. During a broadcast on Wednesday, August 26, he wore a Free Palestine wristband while mixing commentary on political events, fitness, and fashion, a combination that has built his audience among younger viewers.
The backlash intensified following comments made during an August 20 broadcast on Twitch. Piker asserted that Jewish people who publicly express support for Israel put themselves at risk of violence, arguing that people fail to understand the danger of such positions and claiming that it exacerbates antisemitism.
Following the broadcast, several prominent Democrats in Michigan cut ties or condemned the statements. Abdul El-Sayed, a left-wing candidate for the United States Senate in Michigan who campaigned alongside Piker in the spring, declared that the streamer did not speak for his campaign. El-Sayed stated that the safety of Jewish people was as important to him as the safety of his own daughters.
United States Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat from Michigan, also criticized the remarks, stating that no community should face threats of violence because of its political beliefs.
Streamer response and past controversies
Responding on Thursday from his production studio in California, Piker denied the allegations of antisemitism. He stated that he had fought against antisemitism throughout his life and alleged that he was the target of an organized smear campaign driven by Islamophobia.
Born in the United States to Turkish parents, Piker began his media career working for The Young Turks, a progressive political news outlet co-founded by his uncle. He previously drew scrutiny in 2019 after stating that America deserved the September 11 terrorist attacks, comments he later walked back.
Piker affirmed that he will continue to criticize the Israeli government despite political pressure. Recent survey data indicates shifting views among the American public, with a Pew Research Center poll from May 2026 showing that 62 percent of respondents held a negative view of Israeli authorities, compared with 51 percent in April 2019.
