Greece activated a new subsidy on diesel fuel on August 1, 2026, after the average price of both unleaded gasoline and diesel exceeded 2 euros per liter. The government is trying to limit part of the price increases caused by high international oil prices, though the actual relief at the pump will depend on whether international oil prices keep rising.
The state support runs until August 31, 2026, and amounts to 8 cents per liter before VAT, or about 10 cents in the final price. Added to that is a 5 cent per liter discount that Greek refineries continue to provide, bringing the total relief on diesel to 15 cents per liter. The fiscal cost of the new diesel subsidy is estimated at 29 million euros.
No new state intervention is planned for gasoline. Drivers continue to benefit only from a 10 cent per liter discount funded by Greek refineries, which runs through the end of August.
Brent Near 90 Dollars
Pressure on prices is also being sustained by the international oil market. Brent crude continues to trade near 90 dollars per barrel, reflecting concerns about global supply and risks from geopolitical developments and possible disruptions to maritime oil transport. For the Greek market, the path of international prices and Platts prices will largely determine whether the state intervention translates into a real price reduction or gets absorbed by wholesale price increases.
Fuel Prices
Despite the interventions, fuel prices remain high. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Development, the average price of regular unleaded gasoline stands at 2.022 euros per liter, while diesel stands at 2.060 euros per liter. The heaviest costs continue to be recorded in island regions.
For unleaded gasoline, the Cyclades remain the most expensive region in the country, with an average price of 2.266 euros per liter, while the lowest price is recorded in Imathia, at 1.985 euros. For diesel, the Cyclades also top the list at 2.257 euros per liter, while the lowest average price is found in Serres, at 2.017 euros per liter.
Based on the total discount of 15 cents per liter, a driver filling a 50 liter tank with diesel saves up to 7.50 euros per fill up. For a driver who refuels four times a month, the total benefit could reach about 30 euros.
