Google has launched a new login option that lets users access their accounts by recording a short selfie video, giving an alternative to those who are locked out or cannot reach their usual device.
The company describes the selfie video as a new way to access an account, offering more options when users are blocked or do not have access to their regular phone or computer.
To set up the feature, users record a video on their smartphone by looking at the camera and making a few guided head movements to capture multiple angles. When logging in later, they repeat the same gestures, and artificial intelligence then analyzes the resemblance to approve or deny access.
Google says only the account holder has access to the video. The company states that the recording is stored securely with the user’s consent, can be deleted at any time from the Google account, and is used solely for login unless the user chooses to share it for other purposes.
The feature is not available to all users. Google has posted a link on its website for users to check whether they are eligible.
